The story
Five years auditing the banks.
I spent five years at KPMG in financial services audit, working up to assistant manager, auditing the banks themselves. You learn quickly how lending decisions actually get made, which means you learn where they get stuck.
I wanted to be accountable to the person in front of me, rather than to a ladder. So I built somewhere that works that way.
The skills did not change, only who they are pointed at. Instead of checking the banks' numbers for the banks, I put the same rigour to work for the person on the other side of the table: your borrowing power, your structure, your outcome.
The legal obligation sits with me too. As a broker I am bound by Best Interests Duty, which means I am required by law to act in yours. A bank's staff can only recommend that bank's products. I have more than fifty lenders to choose between, and I get paid on whether you were happy enough to tell someone about it.
